How to Create and Use Coupons for Your LaunchPass Community

TL;DR Create coupons in Stripe, not LaunchPass. Log in to Stripe dashboard. Click Coupons. Click New. Set code, discount, and duration. Save it. Enable coupons on page. Republish. Need Premium plan ($29/month) to use coupons.

Should You Use a Coupon or Free Trial?

Use a Free Trial when:

  • You want first month completely free

  • Members should try before they pay

  • You want simpler signup (no code needed)

  • Building trust with new audience

  • Testing your community concept

Use a Coupon when:

  • You want partial discount (like 20% off)

  • Creating special offers for specific groups

  • Running limited-time promotions

  • Rewarding loyal members or referrals

  • Partnering with affiliates

Key difference: Free trials are automatic. Everyone gets them. Coupons require a code. Only people with the code get the discount.

Our recommendation: For first-month-free offers, use free trials instead. They're easier for members. You still capture email addresses. Signup conversion is higher.

This guide covers coupons. For free trials, see your page settings under "Free Trial Options."

What You Need Before Creating Coupons

Requirements Checklist

  • ✅ LaunchPass Premium plan ($29/month)

  • ✅ Stripe account connected to LaunchPass

  • ✅ Published LaunchPass page

  • ✅ Clear goal for your coupon

Don't have Premium? You need it to accept payments and use coupons. Start your 14-day free trial in the Billing section of your dashboard.

Stripe not connected? Go to Settings in LaunchPass. Click "Connect with Stripe." Follow the steps. Takes 5 minutes.

How to Create a Coupon (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Log In to Your Stripe Dashboard

  1. Go to dashboard.stripe.com

  2. Enter your email and password

  3. Click Log In

Multiple Stripe accounts? Make sure you're in the account connected to LaunchPass. Check the account name in the top left corner.

Step 2: Go to the Coupons Section

Step 3: Click New to Create Coupon

  1. Click the + New button (top right corner)

  2. A form appears

This form has several fields. Let's fill them in.

Step 4: Fill In Coupon Details

Coupon ID:

  • This is the code members will type

  • Make it simple and memorable

  • Examples: WELCOME20, LAUNCH50, EARLYBIRD

  • Use ALL CAPS (easier to read and type)

  • No spaces allowed

  • Can include numbers

Important: The ID is what members actually enter. Don't leave this blank or Stripe creates a random code like "xJ9kL2pQ" which is hard to remember.

Name:

  • Internal name for you to identify the coupon

  • Members don't see this

  • Make it match the ID for clarity

  • Example: If ID is WELCOME20, name it "WELCOME20" too

Amount Off - Choose One:

Option A: Percentage Discount

  • Click "Percent" button

  • Enter a number (like 20 for 20% off)

  • Best for: Most situations

  • Examples: 10%, 20%, 30%, 50%

Option B: Fixed Amount

  • Click "Fixed amount" button

  • Enter dollar amount (like 10 for $10 off)

  • Best for: Specific dollar discounts

  • Note: Must match your page currency

Duration - Choose One:

Option A: Forever

  • Discount applies to every payment

  • Member pays reduced price permanently

  • Example: $50/month becomes $40/month forever

  • Best for: Loyalty rewards, grandfathering members

Option B: Once

  • Discount applies to first payment only

  • Then full price starts

  • Example: First month $40, then $50/month

  • Best for: One-time promotions, new member incentives

Option C: Repeating

  • Discount applies for set number of months

  • Then full price starts

  • Enter how many months (like 3 or 6)

  • Example: First 3 months at $40, then $50/month

  • Best for: Multi-month promotions, seasonal offers

Advanced Options (Optional):

Max redemptions:

  • Set how many times the code can be used

  • Example: Only first 100 people

  • Leave blank for unlimited

  • Best for: Creating urgency

Redemption start date:

  • When code becomes active

  • Leave blank to activate immediately

  • Best for: Scheduled launches

Redemption end date:

  • When code expires

  • Leave blank for no expiration

  • Best for: Limited-time offers

Step 5: Click Create Coupon

  1. Review all fields

  2. Click Create coupon button

  3. Confirmation appears

Your coupon now exists in Stripe!

Step 6: Write Down Your Coupon Code

Copy the code exactly. You'll need it to:

  • Share with members

  • Test it yourself

  • Track its performance

Store it somewhere safe like:

  • Notes app

  • Spreadsheet

  • Project management tool

How to Enable Coupons in LaunchPass

Creating the coupon in Stripe is only half the work. Now you must enable coupons on your LaunchPass page.

Step 1: Go to Your LaunchPass Dashboard

Log in at launchpass.com or open your dashboard.

Step 2: Find Your Page

Look at your list of pages. Find the one where you want coupons to work.

Step 3: Click Edit

Click the Edit button next to that page name.

Step 4: Scroll to Premium Features

Scroll down on the edit page. Look for a section called Premium Features or similar.

You'll see an option: Coupons Enabled

Step 5: Enable Coupons

  1. Click the toggle or checkbox next to Coupons Enabled

  2. It should turn on (usually changes color or shows checkmark)

Step 6: Republish Your Page

  1. Scroll to bottom of edit page

  2. Click Save or Republish button

  3. Wait for confirmation

Your page now accepts coupon codes at checkout!

Important: You must republish. Just enabling coupons isn't enough. The page must go live with the new setting.

Step 7: Test It Yourself

  1. Open your LaunchPass signup page

  2. Click Subscribe or Join

  3. Look for "Have a coupon code?" link

  4. Click it

  5. Enter your code

  6. Click Apply

  7. Verify discount appears

If the discount shows correctly, you're done! If not, see Troubleshooting section below.

  1. Go to Stripe dashboard

  2. Click Customers

  3. Find the member

  4. Click their name

  5. Find their subscription

  6. Click Update subscription

  7. Find the Discount field

This takes 2-3 minutes per member. For many members, consider sending them a new signup link with a discounted tier instead.

Coupon Naming Best Practices

Your coupon code affects how many people use it. Good names are:

  • Short (5-10 characters)

  • Clear about the discount

Naming Formula

[TRIGGER][DISCOUNT][TIME]

Examples:

  • WELCOME20 (welcome + 20% off)

❌ Confusing: SAVE$$MONEY
❌ Hard to type: Welcome-2024!
❌ No clear meaning: CODE1

Strategic Coupon Use Cases

When and why should you create coupons?

Use Case 1: Launch Discount

Goal: Get first 100 members quickly

Strategy:

  • Create: LAUNCH50

  • Discount: 50% off forever

  • Max redemptions: 100

  • Duration: Forever

Why it works: Creates urgency. Rewards early supporters. Gets critical mass fast.

Example: "Join in the next 48 hours. First 100 members get 50% off forever. After that, full price. Use code LAUNCH50."

Use Case 2: Seasonal Promotion

Goal: Boost signups during slow period

Strategy:

  • Create: SUMMER30

  • Discount: 30% off

  • Duration: 3 months

  • End date: End of summer

Why it works: Gives people a reason to join now instead of later.

Example: "Summer special: 30% off your first 3 months. Use code SUMMER30. Ends August 31."

Use Case 3: Grandfather Pricing

Goal: Keep free members when transitioning to paid

Strategy:

  • Create: FOUNDING

  • Discount: 50% off forever

  • No expiration

  • Share only with existing members

Why it works: Rewards loyalty. Reduces churn. Easier transition.

Example: "You've been here since the beginning. Use code FOUNDING for 50% off forever. Only available to existing members."

Use Case 4: Referral Incentive

Goal: Grow through word of mouth

Strategy:

  • Create: FRIEND20

  • Discount: 20% off first month

  • Duration: Once

  • Unlimited redemptions

Why it works: Makes it easy for members to invite friends with a gift.

Example: "Share code FRIEND20 with friends. They get 20% off their first month. You help grow the community."

Use Case 5: Partner Collaboration

Goal: Cross-promote with another creator

Strategy:

  • Create: PARTNERNAME

  • Discount: 25% off

  • Duration: Forever

  • Track redemptions

Why it works: Taps into another audience. Partners promote you.

Example: Partner tweets: "Check out [Community]. My followers get 25% off forever with code PARTNERNAME."

Use Case 6: Win-Back Campaign

Goal: Re-engage canceled members

Strategy:

  • Create: COMEBACK50

  • Discount: 50% off for 2 months

  • Duration: 2 months repeating

  • Share only with canceled members

Why it works: Lowers barrier to return. Shows you value them.

Example: Email canceled members: "We miss you! Come back for 50% off your next 2 months. Code: COMEBACK50."

Use Case 7: Affiliate Marketing

Goal: Pay affiliates through discounts

Strategy:

  • Create unique codes per affiliate

  • Example: JANE20, MIKE15, SARAH25

  • Track each code's performance

  • Pay affiliates based on redemptions

Why it works: Affiliates have skin in the game. Easy to track.

Example: "You'll get a unique code. For every member who joins with your code, you earn $X."

Coupons vs Pricing Tiers

Sometimes you don't need a coupon. You need a different price tier.

When to Use Coupons

✅ Limited-time offers
✅ Special promotions
✅ Rewarding specific groups
✅ Referral programs
✅ Testing price sensitivity
✅ One-time discounts

When to Create a New Tier Instead

✅ Permanent lower price option
✅ Different feature sets
✅ Student or nonprofit pricing
✅ Annual vs monthly pricing
✅ Multiple membership levels
✅ Long-term structure

Example of tier vs coupon:

Bad: Create STUDENT30 coupon for permanent student rate
Good: Create separate "Student Tier" page at lower price

Why? Tiers are cleaner. No code needed. Easier to manage long-term.

How to Track Coupon Performance

You need to know if your coupons work.

Track in Stripe

  1. Go to Stripe dashboard

  2. Click Coupons

  3. Find your coupon

  4. See "Times redeemed"

  5. Click the coupon name

  6. See detailed usage

Stripe shows:

  • Total redemptions

  • Revenue impact

  • Active subscriptions using it

  • When people redeemed it

Track in Spreadsheet

Create a simple tracking sheet:

Code

Purpose

Discount

Max Uses

Times Used

Revenue Lost

New Members

ROI

LAUNCH50

Launch promo

50% off forever

100

87

$1,740/month

87

Worth it

SUMMER30

Season promo

30% off 3 months

Unlimited

23

$207

23

Testing

Update monthly. Calculate:

  • How many people used it

  • How much revenue you gave up

  • How many wouldn't have joined without it

  • Net gain or loss

Key Metrics to Watch

Redemption rate: How many people use the code vs how many see it?

Example: 1,000 people see offer. 150 use code. Redemption rate = 15%.

Cost per acquisition: Revenue lost divided by new members gained.

Example: Lost $500 in discounts. Gained 25 members. Cost = $20 per member.

Lifetime value impact: Do discounted members stay as long as full-price members?

Track churn rate for each group. If discount members churn faster, adjust strategy.

Common Coupon Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Leaving ID Blank

Stripe creates random code like "xK9pL2" if you don't set ID. Members can't remember or type it.

Fix: Always set a custom ID.

Mistake 2: Not Testing the Code

You publish the code without testing. It doesn't work. Members complain.

Fix: Always test yourself before sharing.

Mistake 3: Forgetting to Republish Page

You enable coupons in page settings but don't republish. Code doesn't work.

Fix: Always click Save/Republish after enabling.

Mistake 4: Using Different Name and ID

Name: "Welcome Discount"
ID: "SAVE20"

Members try to use "Welcome Discount" and it fails.

Fix: Make name and ID match.

Mistake 5: Too Generous Discount

You offer 75% off forever. Can't sustain business at that price.

Fix: Do the math first. Make sure you can afford it.

Mistake 6: No Expiration on Time-Limited Offer

You run "48-hour flash sale" but don't set end date in Stripe. People use it weeks later.

Fix: Always set expiration date for limited offers.

Mistake 7: Not Tracking Usage

You create 10 different codes. Don't track which ones work. Can't optimize.

Fix: Track every code in spreadsheet.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Issue: Coupon Code Not Working

Member sees: "Coupon code is invalid" or "This code doesn't exist"

Possible causes:

1. Typo in the code

  • Member mistyped it

  • Code is case-sensitive in Stripe

  • Extra spaces before or after

Fix: Tell member to:

  • Copy and paste the code

  • Remove any spaces

  • Try ALL CAPS version

2. Coupon expired

  • You set an end date

  • That date has passed

  • Stripe disabled it automatically

Fix: Check expiration in Stripe. Create new code if needed.

3. Max redemptions reached

  • You set limit (like 100 uses)

  • 100 people already used it

  • No more available

Fix: Check "Times redeemed" in Stripe. Increase limit or create new code.

4. Coupons not enabled on page

  • You created coupon in Stripe

  • But didn't enable on LaunchPass page

  • Or didn't republish

Fix: Edit page. Enable coupons. Republish.

5. Wrong Stripe account

  • You created coupon in different Stripe account

  • Not the one connected to LaunchPass

  • Coupon doesn't transfer

Fix: Log in to correct Stripe account. Create coupon there.

Issue: Discount Not Showing

Member sees: Coupon applies but discount doesn't calculate correctly

Possible causes:

1. Percentage vs fixed amount confusion

  • You meant 20% but entered "20" in fixed amount

  • Now it's $20 off instead of 20% off

Fix: Edit coupon in Stripe. Change type to percentage.

2. Currency mismatch

  • Your page is in USD

  • Coupon is set for EUR

  • Discount doesn't apply

Fix: Create new coupon in correct currency.

3. Duration setting wrong

  • You wanted forever

  • But set "once"

  • First payment discounted, rest aren't

Fix: Create new coupon with correct duration. Can't edit existing.

Issue: Can't Find Coupon Link at Checkout

Member sees: Payment page but no place to enter code

Possible causes:

1. Coupons not enabled

  • Check your page settings

  • Make sure toggle is on

  • Republish the page

Fix: Edit page. Enable coupons. Republish.

2. Mobile display issue

  • Link is tiny on mobile

  • Member doesn't see it

  • It's there but hidden

Fix: Tell member: "Look for very small text that says 'Have a coupon code?' below the price. Click that."

3. Browser cache

  • Page is cached old version

  • Before you enabled coupons

  • New version not loading

Fix: Tell member to refresh page (Ctrl+F5 or Cmd+Shift+R).

Advanced: Bulk Coupons for Affiliates

Want to create many unique codes? Use Stripe API or CSV upload.

Option 1: Stripe API

If you're technical, use Stripe's API to generate codes programmatically.

Documentation: stripe.com/docs/api/coupons/create

You can loop through and create codes like:

  • JANE20

  • MIKE20

  • SARAH20

  • ALEX20

Each tracks separately.

Option 2: CSV Upload

Some Stripe integrations allow CSV upload. Check Stripe marketplace for tools.

Option 3: Create Manually

For small affiliate programs (under 20 people), create manually:

  1. Open Stripe coupons

  2. Click New

  3. Create code: AFFILIATE1-20

  4. Repeat for AFFILIATE2-20, etc.

  5. Give each affiliate their unique code

  6. Track redemptions per code

Takes 30 seconds per code.

Coupon Psychology and Pricing

Why Coupons Work

1. Reciprocity You give discount. Member feels obligated to join.

2. Urgency "Limited time" or "First 100" creates FOMO (fear of missing out).

3. Exclusivity Special code makes member feel special. Not everyone has access.

4. Loss aversion "Don't miss out on $50 savings" feels worse than "Gain $50." People hate losing deals.

5. Social proof "50 people already used LAUNCH50" shows others are joining.

Optimal Discount Amounts

Research shows:

  • 10% off: Weak. Barely motivates.

  • 20% off: Good. Sweet spot for most.

  • 30% off: Strong. Creates real urgency.

  • 50% off: Very strong. Use sparingly.

  • 75%+ off: Too much. Devalues your offering.

For most communities:

  • First-time discount: 20-30% off

  • Loyalty discount: 25-40% off forever

  • Affiliate discount: 15-25% off

  • Flash sale: 40-50% off once

Duration Strategy

Forever discounts:

  • Pro: Member locked in at low rate

  • Con: You lose revenue permanently

  • Best for: Rewarding early supporters, loyalty

Once discounts:

  • Pro: Low risk, easy to test

  • Con: Less incentive than multi-month

  • Best for: Quick promotions, one-time offers

Repeating discounts (3-6 months):

  • Pro: Good middle ground

  • Con: Members might cancel when discount ends

  • Best for: Seasonal campaigns, testing

Our recommendation: Start with 3-month repeating discounts. Test. Then decide on forever discounts for special cases only.

Platform-Specific Considerations

Discord Communities

Coupons work the same across all platforms. But Discord-specific tips:

Use coupons for:

  • Different role tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold)

  • Upgrading from free to paid

  • Special events (game launch, tournament entry)

Discord member behavior:

  • More likely to use codes (gamer culture)

  • Higher redemption rates (20-30% typical)

  • Younger audience responds to urgency

Slack Communities

Use coupons for:

  • Professional/corporate discounts

  • Annual membership incentives

  • Partner organization deals

Slack member behavior:

  • More conservative with spending

  • Lower redemption rates (10-15% typical)

  • Value stability over discounts

Telegram Communities

Use coupons for:

  • International pricing (different regions)

  • Crypto/trading signal groups

  • Quick flash sales

Telegram member behavior:

  • Very price-sensitive

  • Higher churn without discounts

  • Responds well to urgency (24-48 hour offers)

FAQ: Common Questions

Can I edit a coupon after creating it?

No. Stripe doesn't allow editing. You must create a new coupon.

Workaround: Create the new code. Tell members to use the new one. Archive the old one.

Can I delete a coupon?

Yes. Go to Stripe Coupons. Click the coupon. Click Delete.

Warning: This breaks it for anyone trying to use it. Only delete expired or unused codes.

Do coupons work with annual subscriptions?

Yes. The discount applies based on your settings.

Example: 20% off annual plan = $500/year becomes $400/year.

Can I combine multiple coupons?

No. Stripe only allows one coupon per subscription. Members must choose.

Workaround: Create a single better code combining both offers.

Example: Instead of SAVE10 + EXTRA5, create SAVE15.

What happens if someone cancels with a forever discount?

The discount ends. If they rejoin later, they pay full price.

Exception: You manually apply the old discount in Stripe.

Can I see who used which code?

Yes. In Stripe:

  1. Go to Customers

  2. Click a customer name

  3. See their subscription

  4. Check "Discount" field

  5. Shows which code they used

For bulk tracking, export customer data from Stripe.

Do coupons affect my LaunchPass fees?

Yes. LaunchPass charges 3.5% of what you actually receive.

Example:

  • Full price: $100/month

  • Member uses 50% off code: $50/month

  • LaunchPass fee: 3.5% of $50 = $1.75

You pay fees on discounted amount, not full price.

Can international members use coupons?

Yes. Coupons work globally.

Note: Fixed-amount coupons use your currency setting. A $10 coupon is always $10 USD (or whatever currency you chose), not adjusted for local currency.

How do I create a free trial instead of a coupon?

Go to your LaunchPass page settings. Find "Free Trial" section. Choose duration:

  • 1 week

  • 2 weeks

  • 1 month

No Stripe coupon needed. Members get automatic trial.

Can I limit coupons to new members only?

Not automatically. Stripe doesn't distinguish new vs existing.

Workaround: Use max redemptions. Share code only with new members. Don't post publicly.

What if I want different codes for different platforms?

Create separate coupons:

  • DISCORD20 (for Discord members)

  • SLACK20 (for Slack members)

  • TELEGRAM20 (for Telegram members)

Share each code with the respective group. Track performance separately.

How do I grandfather members transitioning from free to paid?

Create a forever discount coupon:

  • Code: FOUNDING or EARLYBIRD

  • Discount: 30-50% off

  • Duration: Forever

  • Share only with existing free members

See "Transitioning to a Paid Group" guide for full strategy.

Can coupons be used multiple times by the same person?

No. One coupon per subscription.

If they cancel and rejoin, they could use a different code. But the same code can't be applied twice to one subscription.

When Coupons Don't Make Sense

Don't create coupons if:

You're already pricing too low If your community is $10/month, a 50% coupon makes it $5/month. Too cheap to sustain.

Solution: Raise your base price first. Then offer discounts.

You have no plan to end the discount Forever coupons used by everyone = your real price.

Solution: Make that your actual price. Delete the coupon.

You can't track effectiveness Creating codes without measuring ROI wastes money.

Solution: Set up tracking first. Then launch coupons.

Your community has no proven value yet Discounting before proving value trains members to expect discounts.

Solution: Build value first. Get testimonials. Then add strategic discounts.

You're using coupons to fix a broken community Discounts don't fix poor content, inactive community, or bad experience.

Solution: Fix the community first. Then grow with coupons if needed.
