What Happens When You Rename Your Slack Workspace?

TL;DR- Your members and channels stay. You can rename your Slack workspace anytime. Update your LaunchPass page names separately. Tell members about the change so they can find your pages easily.

Quick Answer: Nothing Breaks

Renaming your Slack workspace doesn't break anything. All your members stay. All your channels stay. Your LaunchPass connection keeps working.

You have two separate things you might rename:

Slack Workspace Name: The name people see in Slack. You can change this in Slack settings.

LaunchPass Page Names: The names and URLs on your signup pages. You change these in your LaunchPass dashboard.

These are separate systems. Changing one doesn't change the other automatically.

Understanding What Can Be Renamed

Let's clarify what you can and cannot change.

In Slack: Workspace Name (Can Change)

Your Slack workspace has a display name. This appears:

  • At the top of the Slack sidebar

  • In email invites to members

  • When people search for your workspace

You CAN change this anytime in Slack workspace settings.

In Slack: Workspace URL (CANNOT Change)

Your Slack workspace URL looks like this:

yourworkspacename.slack.com

You CANNOT change this URL after creating your workspace. This URL is permanent.

If you named your workspace "test123" when you created it, your URL stays test123.slack.com forever.

In LaunchPass: Three Separate Fields (All Can Change)

Your LaunchPass signup page has three name fields:

Business Name: Your company or brand name

Offer Name: The specific community or membership name

Offer URL: Your signup page link (launchpass.com/your-offer)

You CAN change all three anytime in your LaunchPass dashboard.

What Stays the Same After Renaming

Here's what doesn't change when you rename your workspace.

Your Members Stay

Every person in your workspace stays there. They don't get removed. They don't need new invites. They just keep using Slack normally.

Your Channels Stay

All channels remain exactly as they are:

  • Public channels

  • Private channels

  • Your LaunchPass welcome channel

  • Channel names and descriptions

  • Channel members and permissions

Nothing happens to channels when you rename the workspace.

Member Access Continues

Members who paid for access keep their access. Their subscriptions continue. They can still:

  • Read all messages

  • Post new messages

  • Access all channels they could before

  • Use all Slack features normally

The rename doesn't affect member permissions at all.

LaunchPass Integration Works

Your LaunchPass connection to Slack stays active:

  • New members can still sign up

  • Payments still process through Stripe

  • New invites still send automatically

  • Member management still works

The technical integration continues working perfectly.

Payment Processing Continues

Your Stripe integration keeps working:

  • Members get charged on schedule

  • You receive payouts normally

  • Failed payments get handled same way

  • Subscription renewals happen automatically

Money keeps flowing exactly the same.

What Changes After Renaming

Here's what does change when you rename.

Members See New Workspace Name

In their Slack app, members see the new workspace name:

  • Top of sidebar shows new name

  • Workspace switcher shows new name

  • Notifications show new name

This happens automatically once you change it in Slack.

Email Invites Show New Name

New members who join after the rename:

  • Receive invite emails with new name

  • See new name when they click the invite

  • Land in a workspace with the new name

Old invites (sent before rename) might show the old name.

Search Results Update

When people search for workspaces:

  • Slack's workspace finder shows new name

  • Search by old name might not work

  • Members should search using new name

This can cause confusion if you don't tell people.

Workspace Switcher Updates

Members with multiple Slack workspaces:

  • See new name in their workspace list

  • Might not recognize your workspace at first

  • Need to learn the new name

Warn members before changing so they don't get confused.

How to Rename Your Slack Workspace

Here's the step-by-step process for changing your workspace name in Slack.

Step 1: Open Workspace Settings

  1. Click your workspace name at the top left

  2. Select "Settings & administration"

  3. Click "Workspace settings"

  4. This opens settings in your web browser

You must be the workspace owner to do this.

Step 2: Navigate to Workspace Name

  1. Look for "Workspace Name" section

  2. It shows your current workspace name

  3. Click "Edit" or the pencil icon next to the name

Step 3: Enter New Name

  1. Type your new workspace name

  2. Keep it clear and recognizable

  3. Avoid confusing names

  4. Don't use special characters Slack doesn't allow

Good Names:

  • Marketing Pros Community

  • Smith Consulting Group

  • Fitness Coaching Hub

Confusing Names:

  • test123

  • My Workspace

  • Untitled

Step 4: Save Changes

  1. Click "Save" or "Save Changes"

  2. Slack updates the name immediately

  3. All members see the new name right away

The change happens instantly across all devices.

Step 5: Update LaunchPass (Separate)

Now update your LaunchPass pages separately:

  1. Log into your LaunchPass dashboard

  2. Click on your community/offer

  3. Click "Edit Page" or "Settings"

  4. Update the fields you want to change

  5. Save changes

LaunchPass pages don't update automatically when you change Slack.

Updating Your LaunchPass Pages

After renaming in Slack, update your LaunchPass signup pages.

Fields You Can Update

Business Name:

  • Your company name

  • Appears on signup page

  • Can be different from workspace name

  • Editable anytime

Offer Name:

  • Your specific community name

  • Shows on signup page and invoices

  • Can match your workspace name

  • Editable anytime

Offer URL:

  • Your signup page link

  • Format: launchpass.com/your-offer-name

  • Change this to match new workspace name if desired

  • Updates automatically when you change it

How to Update These Fields

  1. Log into LaunchPass dashboard at launchpass.com

  2. Find your Slack community in the list

  3. Click "Edit" or the gear icon

  4. Scroll to "Business Name" field

  5. Update to match new workspace name

  6. Scroll to "Offer Name" field

  7. Update this too if needed

  8. Scroll to "Offer URL" field

  9. Change URL if you want (optional)

  10. Click "Save Changes" at bottom

Changes appear on your signup page immediately.

Updating Your Offer URL

Your offer URL is your signup page web address.

Old URL Example:

launchpass.com/old-community-name

New URL Example:

launchpass.com/new-community-name

When you update the Offer URL field:

  • Your signup page moves to the new URL

  • Old URL stops working

  • Share the new URL with potential members

  • Update any links on your website

Important: Old links break when you change the offer URL. Tell people about the new link.

What Doesn't Need Updating

Some things work fine without changes.

Existing Member Subscriptions

Active paying members don't need any updates:

  • Their payments continue automatically

  • Their access stays active

  • Their subscription details stay same

  • They don't need to re-subscribe

Don't worry about existing members. They're fine.

LaunchPass Integration Connection

The technical connection between LaunchPass and Slack:

  • Stays connected after workspace rename

  • Doesn't need to be reconnected

  • Continues working automatically

  • No setup required again

Your integration just keeps working.

Stripe Payment Setup

Your payment processing through Stripe:

  • Continues normally

  • No updates needed

  • Payouts keep coming

  • No reauthorization required

Money flows normally without changes.

Welcome Channel

Your LaunchPass welcome channel:

  • Stays in your workspace

  • Keeps the same name (unless you change it)

  • Continues receiving new members

  • Works exactly the same

The welcome channel doesn't care about workspace renames.

Communicating Changes to Members

Tell your members before and after you rename your workspace.

Before the Rename: Announcement

Send a message in your main channel:

📢 Workspace Name Change Coming Hey everyone! On [date], we're renaming our workspace from "[Old Name]" to "[New Name]". What you need to know: - Your access continues normally - All channels stay the same - Nothing about your membership changes - You'll see the new name in your Slack sidebar The new name better reflects our community's growth and mission. Questions? Ask below!

Post this at least 2-3 days before the change.

After the Rename: Confirmation

Send a follow-up message after changing:

✅ Workspace Renamed Successfully We've updated our workspace name to "[New Name]"! You should now see the new name in: - Top of your Slack sidebar - Your workspace switcher - Notifications from this workspace Everything else works exactly the same. Your channels, messages, and access are unchanged. Our new signup page: launchpass.com/new-name (updated link)

Email to Members (Optional)

For major name changes, send an email too:

Subject: [Old Name] is now [New Name]!

Hi [Member Name], We've rebranded! Our Slack community is now called [New Name]. What's changing: - Workspace name in Slack: [New Name] - Signup page URL: launchpass.com/new-name What's NOT changing: - Your access and membership - All channels and content - Your subscription price - How the community works Look for [New Name] in your Slack workspace switcher next time you log in. Questions? Reply to this email or message us in Slack. Thanks for being part of our community!

Update Your Website

If you have a website with links to your community:

  • Update all LaunchPass signup links

  • Change workspace name references

  • Update screenshots showing old name

  • Fix any broken links

Do this on the same day as the rename.

Common Scenarios and Solutions

Here are specific rename situations you might face.

Scenario 1: Simple Name Polish

Situation: Changing "Joes Marketing Group" to "Joe's Marketing Group" (just fixing punctuation).

Impact: Very minor. Members barely notice.

What to Do:

  1. Change workspace name in Slack

  2. Update LaunchPass Business Name field

  3. Don't change Offer URL (not necessary)

  4. Send brief announcement in Slack

Time Needed: 5 minutes

Scenario 2: Full Rebrand

Situation: Changing "Marketing Basics Community" to "Pro Marketing Academy" (complete name change).

Impact: Major. Members need clear communication.

What to Do:

  1. Announce the rebrand 1 week in advance

  2. Explain why you're rebranding

  3. Change workspace name in Slack

  4. Update all LaunchPass fields (Business Name, Offer Name, Offer URL)

  5. Send detailed before/after announcement

  6. Update your website and all links

  7. Email all members with new information

  8. Pin announcement in main channels

Time Needed: 30 minutes for changes, plus ongoing communication

Scenario 3: Merging Two Communities

Situation: Combining "SEO Community" and "Paid Ads Community" into "Digital Marketing Hub".

Impact: Very major. Members from two groups affected.

What to Do:

  1. Announce merge 2-3 weeks in advance

  2. Explain the benefits of merging

  3. Choose which Slack workspace to keep

  4. Rename the kept workspace

  5. Manually move members from old workspace to new

  6. Update LaunchPass pages

  7. Cancel old community subscriptions

  8. Set up new subscriptions (possibly at grandfathered rates)

  9. Send multiple communications

  10. Offer transition support

Time Needed: Several hours spread over weeks

Note: This is complex. Consider emailing [email protected] for help.

Scenario 4: Fixing Embarrassing Typo

Situation: Created workspace as "Bussiness Coaching" instead of "Business Coaching" (typo in workspace URL).

Impact: Workspace URL cannot be changed (yourname.slack.com is permanent).

What to Do:

  1. Unfortunately, Slack workspace URL is permanent

  2. You can only change the display name

  3. Change display name to correct spelling

  4. Members only see the display name (not URL) in most places

  5. Live with the typo in the .slack.com URL

  6. Or: Create new workspace with correct URL and migrate everything (not recommended - very disruptive)

Best Practice: Double-check workspace name before creating workspace.

Technical Details and Limitations

Understand what's technically possible and what isn't.

Slack Workspace URL is Permanent

When you first create your Slack workspace, you choose a URL:

yourname.slack.com

This URL never changes. Even if you rename the workspace display name, the URL stays forever.

Why?: This URL is Slack's way of identifying your workspace uniquely. Changing it would break integrations and links.

Workaround: None. Choose your workspace URL carefully when first creating it.

Display Name is Flexible

The workspace display name (what people see in Slack) CAN be changed anytime:

  • No technical limitations

  • Changes take effect immediately

  • All members see it right away

  • Doesn't break anything

Feel free to change the display name as often as needed.

LaunchPass URLs Can Change

Your LaunchPass signup page URLs are flexible:

Old: launchpass.com/old-name New: launchpass.com/new-name

You control these completely. Change them anytime in your dashboard.

Warning: Old LaunchPass URLs stop working when you change them. Update all your links.

Multiple Offers = Multiple URLs

If you have multiple paid offers (different channels or tiers):

  • Each offer has its own URL

  • Change each one individually

  • They don't update together automatically

  • Update all offers that need new names

Check every offer page after a workspace rename.

Best Practices for Workspace Naming

Follow these tips to avoid rename problems.

Choose Carefully at Creation

When first creating your Slack workspace:

Think Long-Term:

  • Will this name work in 5 years?

  • Does it limit your community's growth?

  • Is it professional enough?

Avoid:

  • Test names (test123, temp-workspace)

  • Personal names (johns-group)

  • Inside jokes (only you understand)

  • Overly specific names (2024-cohort)

Prefer:

  • Clear purpose names (Marketing Mastery)

  • Brand names (Smith Consulting)

  • Evergreen names (Pro Trading Community)

Keep It Professional

Even if your community is casual:

  • Use proper capitalization

  • Spell words correctly

  • Avoid slang or abbreviations

  • Make it easy to remember

Remember: The workspace URL is permanent. Choose wisely.

Match Your Brand

If you have an existing brand:

  • Use your brand name in the workspace

  • Keep naming consistent across platforms

  • Match your website and social media

  • Build recognition with consistent naming

Plan for Growth

Pick a name that works at scale:

Bad for Growth:

  • "Small Business Marketing" (what if big businesses join?)

  • "Beginner Traders Group" (what about advanced members?)

  • "2025 Cohort" (what about next year?)

Good for Growth:

  • "Marketing Excellence Community"

  • "Trading Strategies Network"

  • "Pro Investor Group"

Testing After Renaming

Verify everything works after your rename.

Test Checklist

In Slack:

  • New name appears in sidebar

  • All channels still accessible

  • Members can post messages

  • Welcome channel still works

  • Integrations still function

In LaunchPass:

  • Signup page loads with new name

  • New URL works correctly

  • Test subscription flow

  • Confirm invite emails send

  • Check payment processing

Communication:

  • Announcement posted in Slack

  • Email sent to all members

  • Website links updated

  • Social media bios updated

  • Old URLs redirect (if you set up redirects)

How to Test Invites

After renaming, test that new member invites work:

  1. Create a test email address (or use a friend)

  2. Go through your signup flow from start to finish

  3. Pay with a test card (if in Stripe test mode)

  4. Confirm invite email arrives

  5. Click invite link and join workspace

  6. Verify you land in correct welcome channel

  7. Check that workspace shows new name

This confirms everything works for new members.

Troubleshooting Rename Issues

If something goes wrong after renaming.

Members Can't Find Workspace

Problem: Members say they can't find your workspace in Slack.

Cause: They're searching for the old name.

Solution:

  1. Tell them the exact new workspace name

  2. Have them search for the new name

  3. Or send them a fresh invite link from Slack

  4. Make sure they're not looking at archived workspaces

Old LaunchPass URL Not Working

Problem: Old signup page link shows error.

Cause: You changed the Offer URL in LaunchPass.

Solution:

  1. This is expected behavior when you change URLs

  2. Update all your links to use new URL

  3. Share new URL everywhere you shared the old one

  4. Consider adding a redirect from your website if possible

Prevention: Before changing Offer URL, note everywhere you've shared the old link.

New Members Not Getting Invites

Problem: People pay but don't receive Slack invites.

Cause: LaunchPass might not have updated settings.

Solution:

  1. Check that LaunchPass is still connected to Slack

  2. Verify welcome channel still exists

  3. Make sure you didn't delete the welcome channel

  4. Check member's email in LaunchPass dashboard

  5. Resend invite manually from LaunchPass

  6. Contact [email protected] if it continues

Members Confused About Name

Problem: Members don't understand why name changed.

Cause: Insufficient communication about the change.

Solution:

  1. Send detailed explanation message

  2. Explain reasons for rebrand/rename

  3. Reassure them nothing else changed

  4. Answer questions publicly in main channel

  5. Pin explanation message for new members

When to Rename vs Keep Original Name

Sometimes keeping your original name is better.

Good Reasons to Rename

Rebrand: Your business rebranded, community should match.

Growth: Original name limits your community's scope.

Professionalism: Original name was too casual or had errors.

Clarity: New name better explains what your community is.

Legal: Trademark or legal issues with original name.

Bad Reasons to Rename

Whim: You just feel like changing it without real reason.

Boredom: You're bored with the current name.

Trends: Chasing current naming trends that will become dated.

Confusion: Changing frequently confuses members.

When to Keep Original Name

Brand Recognition: Members know your current name well.

SEO Value: Current name ranks well in search results.

Simplicity: Current name works fine, no real need to change.

Stability: Frequent changes disrupt community culture.

Advanced: Multiple Community Management

If you run several LaunchPass communities on Slack.

Naming Strategy Across Communities

Keep names clearly distinguished:

Bad Naming:

  • Marketing Community

  • Marketing Group

  • Marketing Team

Members get confused about which is which.

Good Naming:

  • Beginner Marketing Bootcamp

  • Pro Marketing Mastermind

  • Agency Owner Network

Clear differentiation helps members understand.

Workspace URL Planning

Since workspace URLs are permanent, plan ahead:

Use Prefixes:

  • brandname-beginners.slack.com

  • brandname-pro.slack.com

  • brandname-vip.slack.com

Use Descriptors:

  • marketingbootcamp.slack.com

  • marketingpro.slack.com

  • marketingvip.slack.com

This prevents confusion later.

Cross-Promotion After Rename

If one community rebrands:

  • Announce in other communities too

  • Update cross-promotion materials

  • Fix links between communities

  • Keep messaging consistent
