Discord

Discord is a powerful chat platform — originally designed for gaming — that specializes in text, image, video and audio communication between users. In recent years it’s become a popular way of creating profitable, subscription-based chat communities.

It’s been used to launch paid communities for everything from funding non-profits, premium reselling groups, expert communities, stock and financial trade alerts groups, to supporting podcasts and YouTube creators.

Key Features:

  • Size: Supports all community sizes, up to 1 million members.

  • Cost: Free to start, with optional paid features.

  • Pros: Multiple channels for different topics, a wide variety of bots for moderation, custom emojis, Roles to help manage what members can see and do.

  • Cons: Steeper learning curve, some paid options needed for advanced features.

Telegram

  • Pros: Secure, easy to set up, unlimited multimedia upload, robust bot ecosystem, and suitable for large groups.

  • Cons: Can become noisy due to high engagement in a single chat thread. While you can create Topics to help organize Groups, they are not quite as customizable as channels in Discord.
